Holiday Decorating Without Breaking The Bank

Hi!  I’d like to share some tips and tricks to spruce up your home for the holiday season.  The best thing is that you can re-use material from the outside, from your recycling or what you may already have in your home!  Just follow these simple steps and before December 1, you will be ready to invite guests into your jazzed-up new holiday home and only you will know the secrets.  In today’s turbulent economy, we are all trying to tighten our financial belts a bit more than usual.  Making your home fabulous for the holidays should not take any extra cash.

Let’s start with the front door, the first area your guests will see.  Beautiful greenery swags can cost you at least $45.00 to $65.00; however, your neighbors don’t have to know you didn’t pay that at all!  The first step is to take a trip to your local garden supply store or visit a live Christmas tree vendor in your area.  Ask them if they have any cut branches from the trees in stock.  If they do, you can usually haggle to get them for free or at very little cost, since they are not pieces that will be used again.

Once you have the fresh greens home you will need to begin building your swag.   Place the larger pieces on the bottom with the stems facing toward the top.  Secure them with bread ties or string you have laying around the house.  Begin looking around your home any attractive red, green or gold ribbon you may have from last year’s wrappings.  Place the bow securely around the stem of the pine branches while making a loop in the back for hanging.  Personalize the greenery by using pine cones, glitter or ribbon.  Remember that less is always more.

To keep your dining room looking festive throughout this holiday season, consider following some of these simple ideas:  take a decorative glass bowl that you may have hiding at the back of your cabinets and add a small strand of battery operated lights to the bottom.  Then fill the bowl with pine cones and cover with glitter or Christmas ornaments.   Another great money saving idea is to add three to five pillar candles of the same color, but not the same size to a nice serving tray that you will not need for the reason.  You can place this decoration in the middle of your dining table.   If you do not have the candles, your local dollar store is a great place to find them for low cost.  Surround the bottom of the tray with fresh greens from your yard.  For example, you can use: holly leaves, pine boughs or bright green magnolia leaves.

Another great suggestion that will require little to no money is decorating your fireplace mantel or a sofa table.  You can use fresh greens from outside or from the local Christmas tree stand to create a focal point.  Then, line the surface with the greens and intertwine battery operated twinkle lights.  To add a little holiday pop, you can add artificial poinsettias flowers that can be found either in Wal-Mart or your local dollar store.  You can even opt to include the pillar candles that were suggested for the dining area.

Remember, true holiday spirit is not in spending, it is in sharing your heart with others.  Invite friends and family into your warmly decorated home to enjoy company and rest easy that you haven’t spent a fortune on decorations.  The best holiday gift you can give is recycling and reusing!
